Confirm the replacement dimensions
Measure the alcove and note the drain side, wall conditions and floor height. A nominal tub size does not remove the need to verify the actual opening.
Decide what happens to the walls
If the surround is being replaced, choose a water-resistant assembly designed for the tub. If existing wall finishes are staying, confirm they can be tied back into the new installation cleanly.
Plan removal and access
Large tubs can be difficult to remove through narrow doors or hallways. Contractors may cut or break up old material, but the access route should still be considered before demolition.
